Our first paper on lutein and retinopathy of prematurity has been published in the Journal of Nutrition! Check it out here: https://jn.nutrition.org/article/S0022-3166(24)01177-5/abstract
Multiple awards received at conferences and symposiums (July 2024)
It has been a productive summer for the Tan Lab!
Yanqi and Sayma won the 1st and the 2nd place, respectively, in the Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science Poster Competition (the Carotenoids and Retinoids topical area) at Nutrition 2024, the ASN annual conference, held in Chicago.
In addition, Yanqi received the Best Abstract Award at the 6th NACAN Nutrition Symposium. Sayma received the Early Investigator Award at the 3rd Virtual International Conference on Carotenoids.
Congratulations!

Grant application selected for funding (June 2024)
Nolan and Dr. Tan received funding from the Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research Program to study the effects of maternal supplementation of lutein on the progression of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in a golden mouse model for carotenoids research. ROP is an eye disease that affects ~32% of hospitalized preterm babies in the U.S. and is a leading cause of blindness among them. The study will explore a safe and efficient way to optimize the visual health of at-risk infants.
Congratulations!

Research recognized by ASN (April 2024)
Congratulations to Sayma and Yanqi, who were both selected as a finalist to participate in the Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science Poster Competition at NUTRITION 2024 that will be held in Chicago in June!
Grant application to USDA-NIFA selected for funding (March 2023)
Congratulations to Dr. Tan for receiving a grant from the USDA-National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA)! Dr. Tan and the co-PI of the project, Dr. Lingyan Kong, will develop a model infant formula fortified with lutein that can be delivered with a high efficiency. They will then test the bioavailability and bioactivity of lutein in the formula in a neonatal rodent model. The research will provide a nutritional approach to maximize the health effects of lutein, benefiting newborns and infants, especially the at-risk groups.
Grant application selected for funding (August 2022)
Yanqi and Dr. Tan received funding from the Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research Program to study the role of lutein, a dietary antioxidant and the main component of the macular pigment, in the progression of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in newborn rats. ROP is an eye disorder that affects ~32% of hospitalized preterm babies in the U.S. and is a leading cause of blindness among them. The study will inform clinical research to optimize the visual health of at-risk infants.
Research recognized at multiple conferences (August 2022)
Yanqi received multiple awards at the conferences and symposiums that she attended in 2022.
- Student Award at the Fourth NACAN Summit Frontiers in Nutrition 2022
- Outstanding Presentation Award at the International Conference on Carotenoids
- Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science Abstract Recognition Award at Nutrition 2022
- 1st Place in Graduate Student Poster Presentation at UWA Research Symposium 2022
- 2nd Place in Graduate Student Oral Presentation at UWA Research Symposium 2022
Research recognized by ASN, again! (June 2021)
Yanqi has been named as a finalist in the American Society for Nutrition’s (ASN) Graduate Student Research Award Competition! Nine finalists were chosen from 212 applicants and will be recognized during NUTRITION 2021 LIVE ONLINE. Yanqi’s abstract is titled “Association Between Dietary Lutein/Zeaxanthin Intake and Metabolic Syndrome among U.S. Females: An Analysis of National Health and Examination Survey 2015-2018”. Drs. Libo Tan and Linda Knol are the faculty mentors of this work.
Yanqi has also been named as a finalist for the Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science Abstract Recognition Award Program, which recognizes the top 15% abstracts out of more than 800. Both her abstract above and another one titled “Applying Pickering Emulsions Stabilized by Octenylsuccinylated Starch and Gum Arabic As Lutein Carriers to Improve Its Stability” (mentors: Drs. Libo Tan and Lingyan Kong) were selected into the program.
Congratulations on the outstanding achievements, Yanqi!

Research recognized by ASN! (June 2020)
Two abstracts submitted by Yanqi (first author) and Dr. Tan (senior author) to the annual conference of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), Nutrition 2020, were both recognized for the award - Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science Finalist, which recognizes the highest quality research presented by students and young investigators.
Congratulations, Yanqi! Great work, Team.
